WoW Newsletter: February 2022

Welcome to the Wheel of Wellbeing (WoW) – a simple framework designed to improve people’s health, happiness and wellbeing by focusing on six areas – Body, Mind, Spirit, People, Place and Planet.  This monthly  newsletter provides a roundup of the latest wellbeing tips, activities, research and resources to inspire better health and wellbeing. Tap into them – for yourself, your families, workplaces, schools and communities – and help create a happier world for us all!

Maya Angelou once said “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

When we make others feel good it works for us too. Acts of kindness release neurochemicals in our bodies that increase trust and give us a warm feeling. A 2020 review of kindness research has found that informal acts of kindness such as bringing a meal to a grieving friend appear to have a bigger impact on happiness than performing more formal acts, such as volunteering. The theory is that informal helping may fill our basic psychological needs for autonomy and close relationships, which is why it could lead to greater happiness. So, this month we are focusing on kindness and connecting. 

WoW Days of the Month

Why not use these inspiring international days to create a focal point for wellbeing activities in your school, workplace or community.

3rd February World Read Aloud Day (WRAD)

For much of history, reading was a noisy activity.  4000 years ago in ancient Iraq and Syria, the commonly used words for “to read” literally meant “to cry out” or “to listen”.  It’s only in more recent times that reading has become a more silent.  A growing body of research suggests that reading aloud has a number of benefits from helping improve our memories to strengthening emotional bonds between people. So why not celebrate World Read Aloud Day by doing just that – get a book and read it aloud. You can do this alone, with your children, and even with your friends and family.  If you’re a teacher consider celebrating the day in your classroom as well.   You can find WRAD resources on the litworld website.

17th February – Random Acts of Kindness Day                                                                                                 14th-20th February Random Acts of Kindness Week

According to the Mental Health Foundation acts of kindness can boost feelings of confidence, being in control, happiness and optimism. They may also encourage others to repeat good deeds, so contributing to a kinder community. So why not perform a random act of kindness in your community, school or workplace, or download some of these amazing resources and encourage your family, friends and colleagues to make kindness an everyday practice.
