WoW Newsletter: June 2022

Welcome to the Wheel of Wellbeing (WoW) – a simple framework designed to improve people’s health, happiness and wellbeing by focusing on six areas – Body, Mind, Spirit, People, Place and Planet.  This monthly  newsletter provides a roundup of the latest wellbeing tips, activities, research and resources to inspire better health and wellbeing. Tap into them — for yourself, your families, workplaces, schools and communities — and help create a happier world for us all.

How many times a day do you check your phone? 10? 20? 30 times a day? You may, or may not, be surprised to know that on average people check their phones between 49 and 80 times a day.   As mobile devices become more and more central to our lives there is growing evidence that excessive media use is not good for us physically, mentally, or emotionally.  The good news is that taking a media break is a powerful way to improve our well-being. So, the theme for this month’s newsletter is ‘disconnect to reconnect’.  Let’s make a conscious effort to spend a little more time ‘unplugged’ from the virtual world and physically connect with people, places and the planet.

WoW Days of the month

Why not use these WoW days of the month to create a focal point for wellbeing activities in your school, workplace or community and inspire people to connect with people, places and the planet?

  2nd – 5th June  The Big Lunch

The big lunch is UK’s annual celebration of neighbours and communities where people come together with their communities and share a meal. It encourages more connected, friendlier, safer neighbourhoods where people start to share more – from conversations and ideas to skills and resources.

Several countries around the world have similar days dedicated to celebrating the importance of connecting with neighbours.  Research conducted by Relationships Australia in collaboration with the Australian National University found that involvement in Neighbour Day leads to a tangible and sustained reduction in loneliness.

3rd June – World Bicycle Day
       6- 13th June – UK Bike Week

This year Bike Week is all about you and your local community.  So why not swap your screen for a bike on 3rd June and get outside and enjoy your local area on two wheels?

5th June – World Environment Day

In the universe are billions of galaxies, in our galaxy are billions of planets, but there is only one earth lets take care of it.

Connect with your planet for World Environment Day. With over 150 countries participating, this UN international day engages governments, businesses, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities and communities, raising awareness and celebrating environmental action. This year’s campaign, #OnlyOneEarth, highlights the need to reset the balance with nature through transformative changes in how we eat, live, work and move around.

Individuals can be important drivers of change through their support for businesses and governments. The actions of these larger entities can have a transformational impact, potentially locking in sustainable consumption and production behaviours for the decades to come.  Join people around the world and build your earth action commitment.  Let’s go from harming the planet to healing it.
